Afternoon with a former colleague

Had a great day yesterday!

A former USPS colleague and I met for lunch and a movie. She and I worked together for about a year or two, before she retired. We’ve always talked about getting together for lunch or whatever, but “never got around to it”. She enjoys some of the same things as I do: theatre, movies, etc. Well, we finally got together yesterday, and we just had the best time.

We met at Schlotsky’s near Southdale mall. I believe she had never eaten there before. I think she had the fiesta chicken sandwich, and I had “the original”. Schlotsky’s sandwiches are just really, really good. Not sure if it’s the bread or the sauce or what. We spent the good part of an hour just catching up, and laughing.

The movie was “Star Trek: Beyond”. It was only afterwards that I learned that she hadn’t yet seen the first two of the re-booted (re-imagined) series. We both liked it, she gave it an “8”, and I guess my rating (from 0-10), would be that or maybe a “7.5”. My personal opinion, I absolutely love the first one from 2009 (giving a nine or even a ten), and it’s a draw between the sequel (“Into Darkness – i.e., “Khan”), and this third one. Not sure exactly what I didn’t like about it, would like to hear your opinion (if you’ve seen this movie). I enjoyed seeing all the same incredible bunch of actors again. And, was glad to see that “Bones” had a bigger part this time, same for Spock. Uhura, in my opinion didn’t have that much of a speaking part, but ended up having a big part by coming to the “rescue” several times. Scotty has some speaking time while Sulu didn’t seem to have much speaking screen time at all. I was a bit sad, upon seeing the young actor playing Chekov on the screen, knowing he had recently passed away due to that freak car accident. There were lots of subtle and sarcastic humor, and that made it enjoyable. A bit too much of “destruction” (similar to “Into Darkness” or the recent “Superman” of a few years ago). I’m looking forward to seeing it a second time – because I probably missed some stuff this first time round.

Afterwards, we went to “Cheesecake Factory”. Believe it or not, I’ve never been to this place before. We ordered “Tex-mex” egg rolls – OMG – they were to die for. I could have eaten two orders myself. And, we ended up talking for another hour or so, trading stories about what was going on in our lives, and we just kept laughing together.

And, then time ran out, and we said our goodbyes.

Thanks, Trudy, for a great afternoon.
